High Grade Anthracite

Our anthracite has an extremely low ash content with higher fixed carbon compared to overseas ultra-high grade anthracite.

Welsh anthracite generally has a low ash content. The quality of the coal produced at Black Diamond is high grade anthracite. The National Coal Board ranked the coal as “High Grade” 100 anthracite.

HG is extracted from two coal seams being the Six Feet and Nine Feet seams with a view to ensuring consistency. The Six Feet seam has a slightly higher volitile making it ideal for domestic and industrial heating as the product is “smokeless” and leaves little residue as compared to overseas high grade anthracite due to its low ash content. The main focus is the extraction of the Six Feet seam.

Black Diamond will be mined from two high quality seams the Six and Nine Feet in the Neath Valley which is ideally located for markets in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia and Europe. Although thinner the Peacock seam will also be mined given its exceptional quality, see UHG.

Given that our HG has a very high fixed carbon content it is appropriate as an additive to blast furnace processes and steel byproducts and filtration etc. The HG when heat treated can produce a premium priced calcined product for numerous esoteric applications.

Our HG has very low percentages of all contaminants, sulphur, chlorine, phosphorus and Mg/K alkalis rendering it ideal for many industrial uses.

Fixed carbon is 93% representing the solid combustible residue that remains after a coal particle is heated and the volatile matter is expelled. The fixed-carbon content of the coal is up to 86% determined by subtracting the percentages of moisture, volatile matter, and ash from the coal.
